AI is unprecedented technology even for Sci Fi fans like me. Artificial Intelligence has long been a topic of philosophical and moral debates, not to mention debates of scientific feasibility. It is important to recognize the speed at which technology is advancing, and ensure that legal and enactable guardrails are in lockstep with the pace of this technology.
So what comes next? The debate on this topic crosses lines of political, geographical, and economic nature. Some claim that the advancement is too fast, and unpredictable, while others claim that speed to market is the primary objective. There are pessimists and optimists in these debates, both contributing as heavyweights in the bout.
In our experience spanning multiple fields, three truths are clear: 1) this technology is powerful! 2) the technology may be advancing faster that we can understand and 3) there are sufficient identified and enforced guardrails, that we can justifiably harness and leverage this technology for the greater good.
Doom and Gloom; The existential AI threat
The notion that AI could be given power to supersede human rights has not been lost in the media and movies, for decades. As a child viewer in the 90’s, I wondered why there could not be a stop button, or a “kill switch” on “The Terminator”. The short answer in today’s world? There is.
Empirical applications of AI
The application of AI has fortunately (and in a less entertaining way) been contained. This is a result of decades of internet security protocols required well before AI existing. In addition, AI exists in data centers, hard drives, networks; in other words, it exists within the same medium that it is consumed. The risks of an AI takeover are limited to the silver screen.
A Bright Future: Enhanced by AI
The new way of thinking about artificial intelligence, is as a tool. Just as the power of early search engines transformed the way people use the internet, AI brings new dimensions and depth to the fingertips of the average internet user.
The future is now, the ceiling is not yet known, and the results are now here for the common person! Let’s Go!
I believe whole heartedly that we shouldn’t hesitate. The tools are available, and we need to use them wisely. It is up to us to do so. With tools like CurriculumEngine.ai that obfuscate and contain AI, hard workers like teachers can be empowered to leverage that power, and apply it, towards their everyday workload.
